Lithuania - Drink Driving

The Lithuanian Ministry of Transport started with an alcohol interlock programme from January 1, 2020. Drunk drivers (up to 1.5 per mille), who have lost their driving license, will be able to apply for their license to be reinstated, but only if they drive vehicles with anti-alcohol engine locks.

“I hope that the introduction of the alcohol interlock system will reduce the number of repeat offences. Alcohol interlock system will allow a person whose job is related to driving to regain their driving license and return to work,” said Jaroslav Narkevicius, Minister of Transport and Communications.

Vehicles with alcohol interlocks have been in operation in Lithuania for some time. More than 80 new school buses equipped with alcolocks have been in operation since 2016.

In Vilnius, Kaunas and Kaunas district municipalities, passengers are transported by shuttle buses equipped with alcolocks. Some freight and passenger companies voluntarily install alcolocks on their vehicles.
