EHYT encourages planning ahead for the Christmas party season

03.11.2026 - As Finland’s pre-Christmas party season approaches, EHYT is encouraging people to reflect on their drinking habits and make choices that support their wellbeing. Its OttoMitta alcohol diary offers a practical way to track consumption and plan changes.

The season, known in Finland as pikkujoulu, brings opportunities to celebrate with colleagues, friends and family. Yet expectations and familiar routines around alcohol can influence drinking without people necessarily noticing.

Thinking ahead can help people decide when, where and how much they want to drink before the celebrations begin.

“You can, for example, think in advance about which occasions you intend to drink alcohol at, how much you want to drink and when you will have alcohol-free days. An entirely alcohol-free Christmas party season is also a good choice,” says EHYT specialist Iina Ranta.

The OttoMitta diary helps users record their alcohol consumption and recognise patterns: how often they drink, how much they consume and in which situations. These observations can provide a starting point for reducing consumption or introducing more alcohol-free days.

Finding enjoyment beyond alcohol

EHYT also encourages people to consider what brings them joy, pleasure and wellbeing.

Alcohol-free drinks and mocktails can be part of a festive occasion, while good food, music and shared activities offer ways to enjoy time together without alcohol.

For those who choose to drink, EHYT suggests reducing the amount consumed, alternating alcoholic drinks with alcohol-free options and avoiding drinking on an empty stomach. Setting personal limits beforehand can also make it easier to stick to decisions during a celebration.

Sharing goals and recognising progress

Telling friends and family about plans to cut down can help build support. Suggesting activities where alcohol is not the main focus can make it easier to put those plans into practice.

Ranta also encourages people to recognise their achievements. Each occasion when someone follows their own goals is a meaningful step, and even small changes in drinking habits can have positive effects on wellbeing.

The message for the festive season is practical: plan ahead, find enjoyable alternatives and acknowledge progress along the way.
