08.07.2026 - Almost two in three Danes believe Denmark needs to change its drinking culture so that alcohol plays a smaller role, according to a new survey conducted by Voxmeter on behalf of Blue Cross Denmark. This represents an increase compared with last year.
Summer is the peak season for festivals, relaxing on the terrace, and social gatherings with family and friends, and alcohol is often considered a natural part of these occasions. However, a new survey conducted by Voxmeter for Blue Cross Denmark shows that a growing number of Danes want a drinking culture in which alcohol plays a smaller role.
A total of 62.8 percent of Danes believe that Denmark needs to change its drinking culture so that people generally consume less alcohol. In 2025, 57.9 percent answered yes to the same question.
“Alcohol is deeply embedded in Danish culture, so it is significant that almost two in three Danes want a drinking culture with less alcohol. This is a clear sign that social norms are beginning to change, which is encouraging,” says Morten Skov Mogensen, Secretary General of Blue Cross Denmark.
“This is not about pointing fingers at people who drink alcohol. It is about creating a culture in which being part of the community does not depend on what is in your glass,” he continues.
Women are leading the change
The survey also shows that 72.5 percent of women believe there is a need for a drinking culture in which alcohol plays a smaller role, compared with 52.9 percent of men.
“Women are clearly leading the way when it comes to wanting a new drinking culture. However, it is equally interesting that a majority of men agree. This underlines that support for a new drinking culture is broadly shared across the population,” says Morten Skov Mogensen.
Blue Cross Denmark works to promote a healthier drinking culture in Denmark, where saying no to alcohol is considered just as natural as saying yes.
About the survey
Voxmeter conducted the survey for Blue Cross Denmark among 1,002 representatively selected Danish adults aged 18 and over between 12 and 19 May 2026.
